Debating Technological Issues

Theme: Smartphones and Tablets in the Hands of Small Children (Ages 0-10)

Subtopic #2:
Children are more likely to become addicted to technology if given a smartphone or tablet of their own before age 10.

What are your thoughts? Where do you stand on this topic? Support your answer!
I can agree, because my little brothers already have tablets and games and as soon as you take them away they get mad and mean like they can't live without it
I can agree, because my little brothers already have tablets and games and everything else and as soon as you take them away they get mad and cry like they can't live without it
I believe this statement because i have a friend say he got his phone when he was 7 years old and is now addicted and is trying to stop the habit
I think that opinion is true i have a little brother and he is addicted to YouTube
I agree, my little niece is only three and she already gets mad when you take the phone or tablet away from her.
I think kids can get addicted to their phones. I'm sure that it will weaken their attention span. Phones are nice, but they shouldnt be on it all the time.
yea i think that is most of the people in the century
Children do not tend to be addicted to technology prior to the subject, in fact, technology has been proven to increase mental activity and stimulate brain growth within the proper usage of said items, learning technological devices have gone from everything into V-smile and leapfrog, both learning tech with brand staples such as scooby-doo to help the learning process of young children.
My thoughts are that children become addicted to the phone at a young age. I can say that children do not need to to be given a smartphone because when they're on the phone their attitude changes and they don't want the phone taken from them, they just want to be all day on the phone.
I agree because they start relying on tech to help with everything
yes i believe kids get addicted to technology at a young age but it may seem like a burden. But also it may be a blessing, for they are the future of technology.
Many of you have mentioned having younger brothers and sisters who are already addicted to technology. What about yourselves? Do you remember when you first got your first device? Did it change anything in you? Maybe ask the people around you if they noticed a change in your behavior.
I do believe that younger children's get too addicted to phones. Once you put one in their hands they won't want anything but the phone. I don't think is bad but i also do think is bad. one because it helps them learn and other it's because their vision can get damaged.

Yes i got a phone when i was 6 and now im addicted to my phone i feel like i cant live without my phone and i need it with me so i do believe that if a child get a phone before the age of ten they will be addicted
I didn't get my first phone till I was 10 and now I am addicted to it. Kids are getting phones when they are 5 and 6. By the time they get to 16 they will be obsessed.
So what can we do to protect our little brothers and sisters? We live in an ever connected world, and it isn't going anywhere. What is the answer to balancing this new technology and living a normal childhood?
I agree, because technology is constantly changing and adapting, the when we're young, we're taught the things we're shown. When young kids have their hands on a phone or tablet, they're distracted from what's around them and it distracts them from learning anything new to use when they're much older.
I think children are more likely to become addicted because they will already have experience. Also having one at so young you could lose discipline from your parents.
yessir
Children are more likely to be attached to their phones before the age of 10 because thats all there used to
i also think that kids will get addicted to electronics at a young age
I feel as if children are more likely to get addicted to the internet because there endless amounts of entertainment; There is also tons and tons of valuable information that would be good for a child to learn at such a young age.The parents should put a parental lock on certain websites so that there entertainment but not corruption.
I agree that children will become addicted to technology before the age of 10 because their minds are still growing and processing a lot of information and with a tablet being placed in their hands, They will grow up thinking that's the only device they can enjoy themselves with.
all of my nieces and nephews love their electronics and there no older than 9

I like this statement. Their minds ARE still developing! This is a link from the Center for Disease Control (CDC).

Early Brain Development and Health
I agree, many children under the age of ten are more susceptible to becoming addicted to mobile devices. At this age children form bonds with things that they can find comfort in. Some kids have imaginary friends, favorite toys, and favorite blankets. With phones and other mobile devices there is this instant gratification we get since a phone can give us what we want instantaneously. This creates a habit of impatient behavior. This can explain why children get mad when the wifi goes down or their phone gets taken away. And this kind of behavior is easier to pick up and develop when a child is at such a young age.
I believe children's can get addicted on cellular devices. I have a 7yr old brother that can prove it. He's entertainment mostly relies on my moms phone. His mood changes once we tell him it's enough. It's a habit he gets when his mind is so young and later it could only get worse.
I believe children's can get addicted on cellular devices. I have a 9,7,and 5 yr old cousin that can prove it. they're entertainment mostly relies on my phone. they're mood changes once we tell them it's enough. It's a habit of getting on anything that electronic sometimes we have to put it high up on the stand for they not going to touch it for a few days.
I think if you jut leave them with the device yes but if you also encourage other activities with it like sports then they should be just fine.
I can agree because I was not allowed to have electronic devices until I was able to drive. Even though i enjoy spending my free time on my phone or computer, I am not addicted the same way my nephew is. My nephew screams and cries when videos are not being played on a phone or a tablet and he needs it to fall asleep.
I agree, because all of my little siblings and cousins are addicted to their electronics.
i completely agree with this my sister got a phone when she was 9 and she never comes off of the dang thing
This is understandable, as I see my cousins grow up with electronics like phones they seem to become addicted to it and not wanting to let go of there them. As it stands for me I don't see myself really addicted to my phone or game console
The overwhelming response is that we see the damage this causes. What about the other side? Does anyone feel that children need their own device at an early age? If so, what are your thoughts? Let's explore the flip side of this coin!
i can agree, because i have a little brother that is very addicted to watching videos on YouTube in his tablet. And he's younger than 10
Yes i do agree, cause little kids having electronics before the age of 10 and they get addicted to their phones or playing on it or watching videos on youtube .
yes, because if a child is introduced to something so addictive at such a young age they will always go to it when they don't know anything else to do, me myself i used to always play video games at a young age and was addicted to it because of such the young age i was introduced.
Yes I do agree with this statement, My younger sister is always on her game console or phone. This is due by, probably being introduced to such things at a young age. I have a similar problem but not as bad, I need to not use my phone as much as I do, and I also need to stop playing video games as much as I do.
I believe children's can get addicted on cellular devices. I have a 9,3 year old niece and nephew that can prove it. They're entertainment mostly relies on my phone. They mood changes once we tell them it's enough
I agree with the following statement. My reason for supporting the statement is the fact that I have a little niece and she was given her first electronic device at the age of 5, and ever since she has not been able to get off of it, and every time you are to take it away from her she acts as if she will die without it.
From experience with 3 younger siblings this statement is very agreeable. I notice that they always want to be on the phone and once they're time is up they want more and more time.
My little brother a tablet and when it time for bed and i go to take it he gets all mad and dont want to give it up
cool
When they are given access to technology to young and it is used as a babysitter. Kids should use technology as a learning tool and entertainment but their parents need to monitor their use and even get involved with them.
Yes, i believe children can be addicted ton cellular devices because the more they use it the more they become addicted
I believe children should not be allowed to have phones at age of 10 and under because it can hinder there learning habit.
i believe it because my little brother is 10 and the only thing he do is play on his phone all day long.
I believe children can get to attached to cellular devices. They should have more times reading books and less time on their phones or tablets.
I believe that young children can become highly addicted to technology. When my brother got his first phone, he was six, but now he is addicted to his phone at the age of twenty.
I believe kids can get addicted to devices. All my life, I've been addicted to games. I have a problem!
Smartphones and tablets can take a kid anywhere with just a click. It offers infinite possibilities for doing something new every time, and this characteristic of handheld devices can cause addiction in kids.
No, because electronics can be used in and educational way to help children learn at a young age.
in all my life I had seen it reach to kids, my parents, and my sister, to know the fact that addiction is an epidemic that we all have. I for one have this addiction myself that held me prisoner to my past actions but seeing this happen to children in another negative way really derails the whole situation. The people around me use it as a way for social status by the toiling media that post dumb things to make children follow that same dumb stuff just because of how cool it looks. And if you had a different life away from phones like i had, it made me smarter in some way but the people around you shun you for your own action. to answer the question at hand i strongly agree with the fact that people can be sucked in the clout, bigot, spoiled-brat, making device.
Children are more likely to become addicted to electronic devices at a young age. They are growing in a new society where we can’t go anywhere without our phone or any other electronic device. It’s a demand to use these devices now. Children will advance with technology as well as having risks of being addicted to it. In conclusion i agree that giving a phone or tablet to a child 10 or younger is a risk of addiction.
Signs of addiction
The following could all be potential signs that your child has a problem with digital device overuse. ... Obsessive-compulsive disorder – Cell phone addicted teens constantly feel the pressing need to use their mobile devices all the time. Turning the phone off can cause increased anxiety and even panic
I believe children's can get addicted on cellular devices. I have a 9,3 year old niece and nephew that can prove it. They're entertainment mostly relies on my phone.
Yes I do agree with this statement, My younger sister is always on her game console or phone. This is due by, probably being introduced to such things at a young age.
I think that everyone having a cell phone in their pockets or hands at all times is just the first step to human and robot symbiosis. Our cell phones can and are an etension of our minds. If you need to know something random, you can just pull your phone out and look it up. What if we could do this but with a device implanted into our minds? You might say, "oh we wont have that for many, many years". Check out Elon Musk and his company neurolink... it's closer than you think... maybe its in your pocket...
I agree to this statement because my little brother had a phone and he used to play all day with it until my mom took it off from him
I agree, my brother is addicted to his games and tablet to the point he barely wants to go outside or do anything when he is on the them. He got them as young age and I feel like it makes kids less respectful when they are on them all the time
This is true because my 5 year old cousin cries whenever her parents don''t give her the phone. She's slowly learning to not cry over this but this is actually true and awful.
I believe that, my sister be gettin attached to her tablet so much that she forget to charge it, then I gotta find it and get it charged up for the next day so she has something to play with.
i see it like this. no one can control everything. but what can be controlled is the amount of time the kids spend on the electronics. to long at a young age and they become addicted. but you have to let them have fun as well.
I agree as well, because for someone like me, I am really addicted to video games... It's like a drug, but yet not a drug. a video game drug.
You or Me or whatever can't live without that device or game or whatever because its like a non-real drug that you just can't keep away from...

I just used the word "drug" as a example... im not taking about drugs... im talking about video games acting as like drugs because you can't stay away from them because of how addicted you have become... I've been there lol...
