WeatherPi is a solar powered Raspberry Pi WiFi connected weather station designed for Makers by SwitchDoc Labs. This is a great system to build and tinker with. All of it is modifiable and all source code is included. The most important functions are:

  • Senses 20 different environmental values
  • Completely Solar Powered
  • Has a full database containing history of the environment (MySQL)
  • Monitors and reports lots of data on the solar powered system - great for education!
  • Self contained and monitored for brownouts and power issues
  • Can be modified remotely
  • Download your data to crunch it on your PC
  • Can be modified to do SMS (Text) messaging, Twitters, webpages and more
  • Has an iPad Based Control Panel
  • Easy to connect to Twitter, WeatherUnderground, etc

What is the AS3935 and How Does It Work?

[Linked Image]

The Austrian Microsystems AS3935 is a programmable Lightning Sensor IC that detects the presence and approach of potentially hazardous lightning activity in the vicinity and provides an estimation on the distance to the head of the storm. The embedded lightning algorithm checks the incoming signal pattern to reject the potential man-made disturbers and various noise sources.

The AS3935 can also provide information on the noise level and inform the Raspberry Pi of high noise conditions.

Now for some research! Thank you Jeff for showing me all of these cool project's you're involved with!!

Blitzortung.org
So, many of you are familiar with the term "blitzkrieg" or "Lightning War" from history class. This website is a network for Lightning and Thunderstorms in Real Time!

*notice how the map also simulates the thunder (growing dark circles) as it travels across the land (at the speed of sound).

LightningMaps.org is an additional service to the main project Blitzortung.org. For general questions about this project and for ordering the necessary hardware have a look at the appropriate documentation, FAQs and instructions before contacting us. Also, the discussion board is a good place for all questions and they will be quickly answered there by us and the participants on most times. Our email address is: mail at lightningmaps.org.

RAMMB/CIRA SLIDER: GOES-16 (East; 75.2W)

I'm not sure how to describe this yet...other than it's very cool! It's similar to the other link, in that it is displaying lightning strikes. If I remember correctly, this technology uses the ultraviolet spectrum to detect the lightning strikes from space. (This will also detect cloud to cloud, or heat lightning). LightningMaps uses crowd-sourced ground stations to triangulate the location of the lightning strikes!

I feel like this can be very helpful. For people who may not be able to watch the weather channel, this could show them what's happening. A device like this can also help weather channels out and make them more advanced. For instance, what if there weather stations are down, they will have this to also show them.
